For those of us who “stand out”
we can never really “fit in”
We are not praying to be popular
We are not praying to be understood
We would much rather be “us”
We would much rather be “real”
And that’s a party you will never need an invitation to – RLH
Recently a long-time friend of mine from my hometown of Buffalo, NY, Rashaad Holley, sat down with fashion blogger Moesha Reid and the student publication I used to write for in college, the UB Spectrum, sharing his thoughts, his vision, his past and his future passions for his current fashion line, Vingt Cinq Rashaad. Take a look & read more below!

UB alumnus Rashaad Holley discusses his inspiration for his clothing line, Vingt Cinq Rashaad.
Rashaad Holley wants the number 25 to symbolize a rebirth of black males.
Holley’s brand, Vingt Cinq, means 25 in French and represents an important age for black men in the U.S., due to inner-city violence.
“There’s a popular Kanye lyric, ‘I wasn’t supposed to make it past 25, guess what, I’m still alive’ and that stuck with me,” Holley, a Buffalo State student and UB alumnus, said. “There are no fashion designers coming from the part of Buffalo where I grew up. Me aspiring to be one is different, it’s not something that kids think about being.”
Holley graduated from UB in 2016 with a degree in business focused in marketing. Instead of entering the workforce, he decided to pursue a second degree in apparel design within the Fashion and Textile Technology department at Buffalo State.

Holley’s goal is to “bring luxury to the urban look.” He’s taken the roughness of the eastside of Buffalo and uses it as inspiration for his clothing line. His great aunt’s death and his distance from his birth father showed him the importance of familial bonds and guided him through his work.
“People always say my garments are clean and I like that a lot because that’s not something you generally think comes out of the ghetto and that’s exactly where they’re from and where I’m from,” Holley said.
[UPDATE] Since originally posting this piece 9 days ago, Rashaad has recently embarked on an unforeseen journey, and taking a leap of faith to pursue his career in the fashion industry, as he has been offered an opportunity of a lifetime to study at Regent’s University in London, England for the summer of 2017. As you can imagine, this is an amazing opportunity for him to grow as a designer and as a man. “I thank you for the time you have given me to hear about my opportunity, and I would be forever grateful if you could contribute to my growth in any way. Thank you!” – Rashaad
Uninvited (2017) is a street couture inspired short visual project directed by Zachary Bxllion, Nneka Gigi and Ronnel Hudson. On April 20th, 2017 the team will be screening the project for the first time, accompanied by Nneka Gigi’s debut collection in a gallery style exhibition!
Please don’t miss this event, we were NEVER invited.
Director Marysia Makowska redefines Effortless, Natural Beauty in her short film ‘Acid Beauty’. The film features Buffalo, NY natives Acid Cupcakes, a talented group of ladies who showcase their individual style while sharing their perspective of what it means to be in a culture obsessed with physical appearances. As they sport their own brand of clothing- shown in the video-the audience is presented with different facets of each character as they elaborate on terms others use to define Self.
A familiar name, but not face to Flagrant City, is Gianni Lee, DJ and Babylon Cartel fashion designer. Years ago we featured Gianni’s TrillWave Mixtape Series where he would release a compilation of up and coming artists. This recent release from Gianni is a bit more insightful and personal than the previous compilations he has worked on.
“B L U is all about my growth as a person. Growing up in West Philadelphia I had six different cats all named Blu. If one would die or runaway we would eventually get another feline and I would again name him Blu. If these cats were personified and Blu #1 wanted to know how I grew up he could only be able ask Blu #6 about my growth. These six cats existed in different stages of my life as these six tracks were influenced by different stages of my life.” – Gianni Lee
B L U is a journey through various time periods and soundscapes drawing inspiration from Club Music , House , Grime , R&B and Folk. Containing six tracks B L U is an experience from start to finish.
Stream the project below by way of Soundcloud!
My favorite tracks from the project include Yellow, Red, Blue and Black, which features the soulful sounds of Marian Mereba.
Recently myself and hometown stylist Simone Alexis Webb reconnected on social media a few months ago, after I saw she shared a link from FlagantCity.com on her Facebook page. I offered her many thanks, as I do with everyone I can who shares our content from Flagrant City or BuffaLowe PR, that I see on social media. I met Simone a few years ago, in passing, through my boy Rashaad Holley, (who used to work at the local brand, Fresh Dogs Clothing Company) at her friend Sheritta’s apartment. This was at our old college, the University at Buffalo (SUNY), one cold winter night in the Queen City of Buffalo, prior to me moving to California in November 2011.
I haven’t kept up with Simone until recently but she’s been doing some great things back in my hometown over the years. From styling, customizing accessories and her dope online clothing boutique, Acid Cupcakes just releasing their fall line, for which she styled and photographed!
